Annuals are plants that complete their lifecycle--germinate, grow, bloom, set seed and die--within one year.  Some plants that are perennials in warmer climates, where they survive from year to year, have to be grown as annuals here even though the tag says "Perennial."  The advantage to annuals is that they will give you all-summer color; you can also change your plan from year to year and do something different every year if you like.  The disadvantage is that you HAVE to plant them every year.
